Atolo – the sofa that transforms your outdoor space into its own island

There are outdoor pieces of furniture that serve a function. And then there is Atolo from Dedon – a sofa that creates a feeling.

Designed by Italian designer Claudio Bellini with inspiration from the island landscape of Polynesia, where each atoll is beautiful in itself but becomes something greater when it meets the others. The Atolo sofa carries that thought with it – it is complete as it is, but it is when it is brought together with the armchair and footstool in the same collection that the setting truly takes shape.

The silhouette is wide and welcoming with a gently reclined backrest that gives that feeling of sinking in and letting the outside world wait a little. Not limp, not rigid – but precisely in that balance where you sit comfortably for a long time without wanting to get up.

The sofa is woven in Dedon's own fibre in a combination of three harmonious tones that together create a depth and texture far beyond the single-coloured. The material is designed to withstand sun, rain and the passage of time – without losing its character.

You could say that the story of Dedon began in a hospital ward in Munich in 1990. It was here that Bobby Dekeyser, the promising young goalkeeper for Bayern Munich, was recovering from a serious blow to the face and decided to give up professional sports and pursue his true dream: ‘I just knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur.’pursue a career in professional sports and instead follow his true dream: ‘I just knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, so I started Dedon right there in the hospital.’But the road to today was far from clear from Bobby's hospital bed. ‘We had no idea what we were going to sell,’ he admits. ‘The idea was simply to work together with family and friends in a pleasant environment and create beautiful things together.’

A unique DEDON fibre
Hand-woven outdoor furniture, raffia giraffes from Madagascar and an ingenious synthetic fibre – the early days of Dedon were a period of exploration, to say the least. Only the fibre, which Bobby had developed with his uncle Seppi, an expert in plastic extrusion, held any real promise. Smooth, attractive and weather-resistant, it was perfect for outdoor furniture, Bobby thought. But how could he convince the world of this?

Production in Cebu, Philippines
The answer came in 1991. At a trade fair in Cologne, Bobby discovered the perfectly woven rattan furniture of a Filipino entrepreneur from Cebu, Philippines. Six days later, with Dedon fibre slung over his shoulder, Bobby was on a plane to Cebu to meet his new friend. Shortly afterwards, he and his entire family moved to Cebu. When they finally returned home six months later, Dedon was an outdoor furniture company.
