Machiya bench rattan

Designed by Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto, the Machiya bench is inspired by the traditional machiya houses - wooden houses with characteristic wooden slats that characterise the urban landscape in Japan. Through elegant lines and a clever storage shelf, the bench conveys this aesthetic in a subtle and functional way.
The bench is handmade by skilled artisans in the durable material rattan. Rattan is extremely flexible and can be moulded by hand using steam, following traditional manufacturing techniques. It is also one of the most durable materials for furniture production, as it regrows in just 5-7 years. At Sika-Design, only the two finest rattan qualities, Tohiti and Manau, are used to ensure the highest standards.
